SoxProspects.com Podcast
The most comprehensive Red Sox minor league discussion on the web.

The Red Sox dropped game 5 of the ALCS minutes before Chris and Ian got on the line, but it's not all doom and gloom on this episode. As the Red Sox head to Houston for the end of the series, where do things stand? Chris and Ian broke down what has and has not worked thus far for Boston. Meanwhile, the Arizona Fall League is making its triumphant return after a one-year layoff, and while Triston Casas has two home runs in the season's first week, he's not the biggest Red Sox story from Scottsdale. Is Jeter Downs' hot start for real? What does it mean going forward? The guys discussed, and added some quick rankings update thoughts to close.

Nice and simple: The Red Sox are moving on to the ALCS. Chris and Ian break down the ALDS win over the Rays, preview the ALCS against the Astros, and leave it up to you to determine if Chris made it weird with his Dancing on My Own reference.

It's playoff time and the Red Sox have one win in the books! Chris and Ian recapped the Wild Card Game win over the Yankees and preview the ALDS against the Rays (including a discussion of the potential roster that will likely sound hilarious in hindsight - we'll address that next week...). Back in the minors, we finally know the Red Sox delegation to the Arizona Fall League, which included a few surprises in addition to the system's top prospect, Triston Casas. We wrapped with a spirited discussion of the SoxProspects.com All-Stars and award winners for the 2021 season and, of course, your emails!

The Red Sox are fighting for their playoff lives. The Triple-A and DSL affiliates are in their final week. Fewer teams, but still plenty to discuss. Chris and Ian weigh in on the Red Sox wild card hopes, Jeter Downs' late-season resurgence, and the first set of players seemingly confirmed for Fall camp. Then your emails led to an extended discussion of the rules changes tested in the minor leagues this year, and more!

While Worcester continues through the final stretch, the rest of the minors have wrapped up their seasons. With the near end of the season, we have a final round of promotions to Worcester to discuss. In addition, Ian had a long strange trip getting to Salem, and shares his notes on the interesting prospects. As promised Chris and Ian talk about Bobby Dalbec's breakout. The guys run down the system awards that the Red Sox announced recently. And finally we get to your emails, which were exceptional, as always.

Ian and Chris got on the horn to discuss the MLB debuts of Kutter Crawford and Connor Seabold, the minor league playoff picture, and the pending announcements of which Sox farmhands will be heading to the Arizona Fall League. They also analyzed the movers and shakers in our most recent rankings update, then closed, as always, with your emails.

Chris and Ian sat down recently with Paul Toboni, Red Sox Director of Amateur Scouting, to discuss his career, how the Red Sox scout and approach the draft, and of course, the two drafts for which he's had the helm. Lots of great information ahead regarding the scouting of Nick Yorke and Marcelo Mayer, how the Red Sox set a draft board, what exactly "building process" is, and more!

With 8 members of the MLB club on the COVID-related IL, what better way to replace the negative with some positive than listening to the fruits of Ian's trip to Greenvile? Want the goods on Nick Yorke, Jay Groome, and the rest of a solid Drive team? Look no further. In addition, the guys did discuss the situation in Boston (well, St. Pete) and the news of the past week, including the promotions of the likes of Groome, Jeremy Wu-Yelland, and a number of 2021 draftees. It's mid-August and the high-energy anticipation and examination of the draft, trade deadline, and signing deadline are all behind us! Chris and Ian got on the horn for our first Checking Levels that includes the complexes. Who is performing? Who is disappointing? The guys looked at both as well as how the weather might be the biggest story at the complexes so far - and what that tells us about a post-realignment world. Plus, we examine the status of Jarren Duran and Tanner Houck in Boston, more promotions, whether the system is improving as much as Baseball America says it is, and of course, your emails!

With the minor league season delayed by a month, the August rankings update also served as the official "midsdeason" update, and boy, did this update ever shake things up! In addition to the debuts of the 2021 draftees—including the answer to the question of whether Marcelo Meyer would debut at number 1—we saw an incredible amount of movement as reports came in from all levels, including the complex leagues. Who rose? Who fell? And why? Chris and Ian dished about all of it, in addition to talking about the Red Sox pitching shakeup, the weekly promotions update, and of course, your emails!

Well that sure was something! One of the most hectic weeks in recent memory, which closed the busiest month in SoxProspects history, led off with another set of promotions in the never-ending promotion season, then exploded into a hectic trade deadline and surprising draft signing deadline. Chris and Ian look at whether the Red Sox did enough to improve the MLB club via trade, and examine what happened with the failure to sign second-round pick Jud Fabian. We close, as always, with your emails!

It's late July, which means both the MLB trade deadline and the draft signing deadline are approaching? Will the Red Sox trade for a first baseman? Will they sign Jud Fabian? Will we be able to keep the two deadlines straight? It's always a question as things get hectic on the player acquisition front! Chris and Ian talked about both pending deadlines as well as (finally) the AAA debut of Connor Seabold, another round of promotions led by Kutter Crawford, and your emails!

With another draft in the books, the guys brought back MLB Pipeline's Jim Callis for his regular visit to the show! He discussed the Red Sox' draft, including where Marcelo Mayer is going to rank on his list, which players might (or might not) need overslot deals to sign, and more! Before our esteemed guest, the guys checked in for the first three games of the Jarren Duran era, then crowed a bit about calling the recall of Tanner Houck. Then Chris ate some crow for saying that the Red Sox would not acquire anyone for CJ Chatham, as Victor Santos has become the newest Sox prospect. After our normal transactions check-in, we got to more of your terrific emails!

Chris and Ian hopped back on to discuss what they expect from the system’s second-ranked prospect, what other moves might be coming, and what this means for the Red Sox lineup.  That out of the way, they review the latest round of promotions and other news from the system. They break down the extension Matt Barnes signed and talk about Connor Seabold’s eagerly anticipated system debut. Lots to talk about this week, but the big story is Ian saw Portland and we have a lot from his scouting notebook to go over. But first the guys go over a healthy amount of news from the system. Starting off is a discussion of how the team can help pitchers who are re-learning to pitch with the new enforcement rules in place. Connor Wong debuted with the big club. A handful of updates regarding injured players cap the news, before we turn our eyes south to Fort Myers. The Florida Complex League kicked off play, which led to a discussion of the loss of the short season leagues. Then it is on to the scouting report on Portland, and two things to note, if you like these kinds of scouting heavy shows, you will love the game updates on our Patreon. You can find details here. Second, Ian will get another look at Portland this week, so expect more of these kinds of updates soon. Finally, Chris and Ian read through the mailbag to talk about what you want to hear about. A few hitters are raking to start the season. We re-ranked players at the start of the month and they talk through the biggest movers. The 2021 Minor League Baseball season kicks off May 4th, and after a year away, we’re all glad that the games are getting started again. In advance of the resumption of minor league games, the Red Sox announced their roster assignments as well as a few cuts and retirements to trim the rosters down. Ian files a report from the Alternate Training Site where he got to see the Sox players scrimmage against players from the Mets Alternate Training Site. As a reminder, with minor league games returning, so do our game reports for our patrons. Visit our Patreon for details. Finally, we close out the show with a trip through the mailbag. Thanks for writing in and make sure to send your questions to podcast@soxprospects.com

The 2021 Major League Baseball season is just over two weeks old. Chris and Ian got together to discuss what they have seen with the big club, including some early takes on who is figuring things out. There’s some bad news on the injury front, and some good news with Eduard Bazardo’s MLB debut and the return of streaming from the Alternate Site in Worcester. Plus, there’s the hot-button issue of the new rule change experiments the Atlantic League will be trying out this summer. And we close out the show taking a quick dip into the mailbag. Thanks for writing in and make sure to send your questions to podcast@soxprospects.com

The season is upon us! Chris and Ian are pumped to preview the imminent MLB season (since delayed 24 hours) and hope you're ready too. The guys discussed what prospects (and graduates) are most likely to impact the MLB club this year on the mound and in the lineup. We also just updated the #SP60 coming out of MLB camp, and the guys discussed Bryan Mata's short drop, Garrett Whitlocks big rise, and more. Chris and Ian have a metric ton of emails to go through. We put out a call for questions and you all stepped it up. Awesome work. Before getting after the emails, the guys go over details from camp. In particular they break down the position players and pitchers who have shown something in camp. They go into details on how the alternate site will return due to the delay of the start of the AAA season. The guys welcome Zach Bryant to the club, who is the player who was named later for Josh Osich. And then Chris and Ian get to the mailbag and your terrific questions. Welcome to 2021. The Commissioner is telling teams to prepare to start the season on time. Free agency and the hot stove are both heating up as well. And our episode is setting the table for bigger things to come. Still, we have some interesting moves to analyze, both made by the Red Sox and by other clubs. Another set of international free agents have begun to sign, and Chris and Ian have the run down on them and the first round of non-roster invitees. Additionally, rumors have been flying about a possible trade involving a young outfielder, and the guys share their thoughts before we crack open the mailbag for your questions.
