A rankings shake-up

Although the big three remained in place at the top of the SP60 rankings in our June update (a surprise to some of you, apparently), nothing else remained sacred in our list of the top prospects in the system! Chris and Ian talked about Luis Perales' jump to number 4, Kristian Campbell's arrival in the top 10, Matthew Lugo's huge jump and Ovis Portes' stunning debut in the top 30. Plus yet another set of injuries at the MLB level and some more promotions!

Chris and Ian discussed the most recent call-ups of Luis Perales, Matthew Lugo, Kristian Campbell, and more, along with the other news from the system. Plus, after noodling on the copious amount of "mid" at the MLB level, the guys cleaned out the email inbox.

Ian is flying solo this week so he does a deep dive on several pitchers in the Red Sox system. He starts off talking about Bryan Mata’s rehab assignment and what his outlook looks like going forward and then how Yordanny Monegro has looked in the FCL. He then briefly talks about Richard Fitts and what he saw in Worcester recently, before going in depth on Luis Perales. He goes through the arsenal changes and what has allowed him to take that next step in his development and led to his imminent promotion to Portland. After that he dives into Elmer Rodriguez’s rising stock and what has worked for Ryan Zeferjahn so far. Finally, he wraps up with a brief recap of how the FCL Red Sox have done so far and including an impressive start from shortstop Yoeilin Cespedes!

The offseason's long but so far it's been slooooooowwww.... sorry, we've probably been watching too much White Christmas, but even Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney would've struggled to find something to sing about the Red Sox offseason so far (of course, we recorded the night before the news broke that the Red Sox had agreed to terms with Lucas Giolito). Still, the guys tried to make sense of it all, as well as taking a quick look at the Tyler O'Neill trade, which went down shortly after our last episode. Maybe we just need to keep recording so that moves can happen a day or two later?

At the last moment, the Winter Meetings gave us plenty to discuss. First, the Red Sox moved Alex Verdugo to, of all places, New York, with the Yankees sending three arms in return. Then, the organization lost NINE players in the Rule 5 Draft, while a tenth was traded in exchange for a pick in the Major League portion. At the very least, the club kept a tradition alive by selecting a Yankee in the minor league portion. the guys discussed the comings and goings, and then responded to your emails. There are always a handful of guys in a given year we get asked about regularly. "What's up with this guy?", "Why do you have him ranked so high/low?", etc. This episode, we focused on a few of those guys, like Ceddanne Rafaela, Nick Yorke, Blaze Jordan and Chase Meidroth. Plus, another round of promotions led by Roman Anthony, and as always, your emails!

It's everyone's favorite time of year, the start of promotion season. Shane Drohan, Chase Meidroth, Nathan Hickey and more are moving up a level, so we had plenty to say. Plus, we somehow haven't mentioned the May rankings update yet, so Chris and Ian discussed in the context of players who Ian had seen recently with the Sea Dogs and WooSox. And as always, we discussed the goings on at Fenway and answered your emails!

How much shine has Nick Yorke regained? And why are the guys talking about the NFL Draft? That, plus we got enough emails that we couldn't even get to them all!

When you cover the minor leagues like we do, it's all about player development, and who better to talk to about that than the guy in charge of that very department for the Red Sox? We were very happy to welcome Red Sox Director of Player Development Brian Abraham back to the show for a great interview, talking about player development plans, how decisions get made throughout the course of the season, and of course, a few key players for the organization in 2023. (Note: we highly recommend going back and listening to episode #253, which was Brian's previous appearance on the podcast, if you haven't heard it yet!)

Meanwhile, three more former top ten prospects, including a former top prospect in the #SP60 and a former #2, have been designated for assignment. Meanwhile, Baseball America and MLB Pipeline released their Top 100 lists, the 2023 IFA signing period opened, and we got a bunch more emails, so Chris and Ian had plenty to discuss!

For Red Sox fans who wanted something... ANYTHING to get excited about, the organization finally came through on Wednesday, reportedly agreeing to terms with Rafael Devers on an 11-year, $331 million extension that will keep him in Boston until the ripe old age of... 36. Yup, it's a good contract and the guys are fans, so they answered the emergency podcast signal to discuss. Plus, we said goodbye to the folk hero of the system, Big Joe Davis, following his retirement, and took some time to once again speculate what 40-man moves might be in the offiing to make room for Justin Turner and Corey Kluber.

Closing out 2022, Chris and Ian finally closed out the '22 in Review series with the low minors hitters after a slow(-ish) week of news. First, there was the matter of Nathan Eovaldi leaving and being replaced by Corey Kluber, with a look at how the 2023 pitching staff appears to have rounded out. Then we got into the minor leaguers, led by a review of what 2022 meant for the deepest part of the system. You know Marcelo Mayer, but what of Miguel Bleis and Nick Yorke? What do the guys think of the players lurking just behind them in the rankings? The answers, plus more of your emails, await!

Xander Bogaerts is gone. Red Sox fans are furious. We all had a hell of a week on Wednesday. First, the Red Sox reportedly came to terms with Kenley Jansen and Masataka Yoshida. Then came reports that the team was making progress with Xander Bogaerts. Then came an incredibly eventful Rule 5 Draft in which the club lost three players, including one huge surprise. Then the big one, as those earlier Bogaerts reports proved entirely incorrect and he signed with the San Diego Padres. Chris and Ian had a lot to unpack, and so they did!

In this week's episode, Ian relays some more reports from his second set of games with the Sea Dogs, finishing his look at the club's stacked rotation, impressive bullpen, and ... also the lineup. Plus Chris and Ian discuss the improving 40-man depth with Connor Seabold, Josh Winckowski, and Jeter Downs, the super-brief call-up of Jarren Duran, Nick Northcut turning into the king of homers and strikeouts, the emergence of Eduardo Lopez, and much more! (NOTE: This episode was recorded before Thursday night's news that Noah Song had graduated flight school and applied for another service waiver - we'll discuss that on the next episode!)

Plus, we dissect who the Red Sox might carry on the final few roster spots and potential complications there, as well as examine how the Triston Casas-Marcelo Mayer-Nick Yorke trio compares to other top threesomes across the league and historically in the organization.

We may have started a podcast in the hopes that the bargaining tables we would discuss would have more to do with player contracts than labor negotiations, but right now, the lockout is the topic du jour, so Chris and Ian went deep on the issues dividing the owners and players and what is at stake. If you like Rage Chris, you will like this. But worry not! There's prospect talk in here too, including an extended debate between the guys about just how deep the Red Sox farm system is right now. If you're among those who think they agree too much, you are going to enjoy this segment!

While the Red Sox may be holding their Winter Warm-Up for prospects, negotiations between MLB and the MLBPA seem as chilled as ever. Still, we soldier on, discussing the organization's newest prospect camp and the newest class of international free agents along with the club's strategy internationally. Also discussed: the latest on the lockout and Seiya Suzuki rumors, plus some minor transactions. We then hit another bumper crop of great emails, talking about the Red Sox defense and its effect on pitching, player projection, what effect the lockout extending into the season may have in Worcester and Portland, and more.

The Red Sox dropped game 5 of the ALCS minutes before Chris and Ian got on the line, but it's not all doom and gloom on this episode. As the Red Sox head to Houston for the end of the series, where do things stand? Chris and Ian broke down what has and has not worked thus far for Boston. Meanwhile, the Arizona Fall League is making its triumphant return after a one-year layoff, and while Triston Casas has two home runs in the season's first week, he's not the biggest Red Sox story from Scottsdale. Is Jeter Downs' hot start for real? What does it mean going forward? The guys discussed, and added some quick rankings update thoughts to close.

It's playoff time and the Red Sox have one win in the books! Chris and Ian recapped the Wild Card Game win over the Yankees and preview the ALDS against the Rays (including a discussion of the potential roster that will likely sound hilarious in hindsight - we'll address that next week...). Back in the minors, we finally know the Red Sox delegation to the Arizona Fall League, which included a few surprises in addition to the system's top prospect, Triston Casas. We wrapped with a spirited discussion of the SoxProspects.com All-Stars and award winners for the 2021 season and, of course, your emails!
